The transportation industry is not for everybody. It is only for strong hearts and resilient minds and those that have worked in logistics know what I am talking about. Getting goods from point A to point B calls for an orchestrated workforce that can be very hectic on some days and can reach poetry level in other days. Am I right? Well, today, I want to talk about the most frequent pain points that we hear our customers talk about, and those are:
- My trucks aren’t getting there on time
- Don’t know where my trucks are
- Don’t know when my trucks are going to arrive
- I spend too much time on calls letting customers know when the truck will arrive
- I have to login to many different ELD/GPS tracking websites to track my carriers
- My customers require information that is hard/time consuming to track manually – when loads arrive at pickup, start loading, finish loading, leave pickup locations, arrive at destinations, unloading begins, unloading ends, when it leaves the destination
- It takes too long to get paid because Proof of Delivery (POD) takes a day(s) to arrive
Are you a victim of any of these pain points? Have you suffered from any of these or do you recognize any of the voices of your team members with these complaints? Your team is not alone, earlier this year, Walmart tightened the requirements of its “on-time, in-full” program. The company not only raised the bar for on-time delivery, it placed more emphasis on delivering in-full — meaning that everything ordered must be in one trailer — by breaking it out as a separate measurable category. Now, suppliers and their trucking companies must meet both performance requirements, which could prove tricky at times when suppliers don’t have quite enough inventory and it is expected that other companies will follow Walmart’s lead.
T.J. O’Connor, chief operating officer for YRC Worldwide and president of YRC Freight, its national LTL division, said coordination and communication are critical so that pickups, transit times and special handling needs can be clearly understood among all parties. If you don’t already have a tightly integrated Logistics Solutions platform to enhance your services, you need to get to it soon, otherwise, you are going to be out of the market.
